Mornings also tend to be the least crowded. Midday and afternoon sailings are warmer and easier to fit around other Jasper plans, and the lake is beautiful in any light. Across the year, the cruise runs only in the open-water season: 28 May to 10 October in 2027.

Maligne Lake is remote with limited cell service and no Wi-Fi, so reserve online and download your mobile ticket before you leave Jasper town. Cruises operate only during the open-water season, once the lake ice has cleared. Pursuit's 2027 season runs from 28 May to 10 October 2027 (in 2026 it ran from 29 May to 11 October). The boat does not run in winter when the lake freezes. Maligne Lake is about 48 kilometres — roughly a one-hour drive — southeast of Jasper townsite along the Maligne Lake Road, passing Maligne Canyon and Medicine Lake on the way. Parking at the lake fills up between about 10am and 5pm in peak season, so arrive before 9am or after 5pm. Shuttles run from June to mid-September (operators include Maligne Adventures, SunDog Transportation and Tours and Pursuit bundles), and the road has strict no-stopping wildlife zones with fines of CA$200 and up.

Bring warm clothing and layers — even in midsummer it is cool out on a glacier-fed lake and the wind off the water adds a chill. The boats are heated and enclosed, but you will want a jacket for the open viewing platform at Spirit Island. Pack a camera or phone, sunglasses and your downloaded ticket, since there is no reliable signal at the lake. Note that baby strollers and large bags or luggage are not permitted on board.
