"The Dark Sky Experience is definitely worth it if you know the forecast will be a clear night. The night before was cloudy so I cancelled and rebooked for the following night. We were extremely fortunate to see the Northern Lights!"

Book Online
Reserve through GetYourGuide; you can cancel up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund. Inside 24 hours the Planetarium does not refund, but it will move your booking to another time.
Check In at Jasper Park Lodge
Park at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge (lot P2 is closest) and check in at the Planetarium desk in the Main Lodge 15 minutes before the start. Late arrivals are rebooked to the next available tour.
Fill the Day Around It
Pair the evening with a daytime tour: the Pleckaitis Canyon icewalk from mid-December, or the winter wildlife tour, both with pick-up in Jasper. Dress for the cold; children under 4 cannot enter the dome theatre.

Winter Field Notes
Jasper in Winter, Explained
What is closed, what runs, and how to build a day in the Maligne Valley until the cruise returns on 28 May 2027.
Most people who reach this site are looking for the boat to Spirit Island. Between October and late May there isn’t one. Maligne Lake freezes, the cruise season ends (in 2026 the last sailing was on 11 October), and Pursuit’s published 2027 season runs from 28 May to 10 October 2027. The Maligne Valley itself doesn’t close. It changes: the lake becomes snowshoe and ski country, Medicine Lake drains away to mudflats, and the nights get long enough to make Jasper’s dark sky the main event.
This page is the winter version of the trip, built around what you can book now and what you can do for free.
What is closed this winter
Two closures change the usual Jasper winter advice.
Maligne Canyon. The icewalk at Maligne Canyon used to be Jasper’s signature winter tour. The area around the canyon was badly damaged in the 2024 Jasper Wildfire Complex, and Parks Canada has kept it shut: its winter page says Maligne Canyon “will remain closed for the 2026 season”, and Tourism Jasper lists it as closed until further notice. The guided Maligne Canyon icewalks are listed as closed too. What replaced them, and how the canyon walk worked, is in our Maligne Canyon ice walk guide.
The Maligne Lake cruise. No boats run on a frozen lake. Spirit Island sits about 14 km down the lake from the dock, so for practical purposes it is a summer view. Both cruise tours on this site, Maligne Adventures’ and SunDog Transportation and Tours’, already have 2027 dates in their calendars (as of October 2026).
What runs: four winter tours worth booking
After dark: the Jasper Planetarium. Jasper National Park is a dark sky preserve, and winter is when the dark comes early. The Planetarium’s three-hour Dark Sky Experience at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge combines a dome-theatre show, a session at its telescopes and a guided walk of about 480 metres to a dark-sky spot for the constellations, with binoculars supplied. The dome runs whatever the weather, and if the sky is clouded out the ticket includes a two-year rain check. From US$100 per person (October 2026); children under 4 cannot enter the dome theatre.
The canyon icewalk that does run: Pleckaitis. With Maligne Canyon shut, SunDog runs a guided winter walk into Pleckaitis Canyon this season, in partnership with Jasper Hikes & Tours, who call it “an area only known by locals.” It is a three-hour trip with round-trip transport from Jasper and a stop at Medicine Lake, and the tour includes boots, ice cleats, a helmet and poles. SunDog’s departures run from mid-December 2026 (15 or 18 December by source) to 31 March 2027; the youngest walker it takes is 6, and its winter tours run down to −25 °C, with snow pants required below −16 °C. From US$64 per person (October 2026).
Wildlife from the bus. SunDog’s three-and-a-half-hour winter wildlife tour picks up at Jasper hotels and drives the Athabasca Valley while the guides look for elk, deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, coyotes, wolves and moose. It is a bus tour with minimal walking, the easiest way to see the park in deep cold, and sightings are never guaranteed. From US$64 per person (October 2026).
On foot in the snow. SunDog’s Secrets of Jasper snowshoe walk includes snowshoes, thermal boots and poles, and the guide picks the route for the day’s conditions. It starts on 15 December, has no reviews yet, and does not include transport to the meeting point. From US$64 per person (October 2026).

The Maligne Valley on your own

The Maligne Lake Road runs 48 km from Jasper to Maligne Lake and stays open in winter, but it is a mountain road, and Parks Canada closes it for storms and avalanche control when it has to (it did in February 2023). Parks Canada’s own winter advice is that bringing ice cleats is always a good idea.
- Medicine Lake (27 km from Jasper). The “disappearing lake” drains every fall through sinkholes in its bed. The water travels underground through a limestone cave system and resurfaces around Maligne Canyon, about 16 km downstream. In winter you walk or snowshoe the shoreline from the northern viewpoint, a route Parks Canada lists at 3 km return.
- Maligne Lake (48 km from Jasper). Parks Canada lists easy winter routes at the lake: the Mary Schäffer Loop (3.2 km, past Curly Phillips’ historic boathouse to a viewpoint over the lake), the Moose Lake Loop (2.6 km) and the Hidden Cove trail along the shore (8 km return). Where a route touches the ice, its note is simply “ensure safe ice conditions.”
- Caribou closures. From 1 November to 28 February, Parks Canada closes the Maligne-Brazeau caribou range to all access, so that packed trails don’t give wolves an easy way into caribou habitat. Its own winter guide points visitors to the lower lakeshore loops during that window; for anything higher, check the trail report before you go.
If you have a day for the Icefields Parkway side, Athabasca Falls and Sunwapta Falls are on Parks Canada’s own list of winter landmarks.
How to build a winter day
A good winter day pairs a daytime tour with an evening one: the Pleckaitis icewalk or the wildlife tour in the morning, Medicine Lake and the Maligne Lake loops in the afternoon if you are driving, and the dome and telescopes after dark. If you only book one thing, make it the evening, because it is the one experience winter does better than summer.

Planning for summer instead? The cruise tours already sell 2027 dates on the Maligne Lake cruise page, and the Spirit Island boat cruise guide covers how the boat trip to the island works.

What Travelers Say
"Friendly and informative. Just a shame about the cloud cover but a generous refund and revisit plan was put into place. Excellent all round - even though we couldn’t do the dark sky walk we still enjoyed all the activities and talks and enjoyed the interactivity of it all. Would recommend"
"The team was full of knowledge, yet made the learning, fun. It was just me, my wife and my 2 kids, yet they treated us with as much enthusiasm as they would to a large group."
"It was great and the guides where extremely knowledgeable"
"I would only book the Dark Sky Experience at very short notice if the sky is very likely to be clear! It was cloudy when we went, so we ended up getting a very, very expensive planetarium show. We were allowed to make up the part we missed within two years, but that is rather unrealistic if you come from Europe. There is no partial refund. The part of the program that we were able to do was good."
"I thought the planetarium portion on the tour was ok but nothing I wasn’t already aware of. The telescope portion of the event was good with a range of optical and video telescopes being demonstrated. The final part was a dark sky tour of the sky which was also good with two excellent female guides. A word of warning, I recommend you don’t book this tour unless you get guaranteed clear skies otherwise you won’t get the full experience."
"Great tour. Wear good walking shoes and bring a flashlight since you'll be walking to the falls in complete darkness."

Check Availability & BookJasper in Winter — Frequently Asked Questions
What is open, what is closed and what you can book in Jasper between the end of the cruise season and 28 May 2027.
Plenty, even with the Maligne Lake cruise closed until 28 May 2027. Bookable tours include the Jasper Planetarium's Dark Sky Experience at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, SunDog's winter wildlife bus tour from Jasper hotels, a guided icewalk in Pleckaitis Canyon from mid-December and a snowshoe walk. On your own, you can snowshoe the Medicine Lake shoreline and walk the Mary Schäffer and Moose Lake loops at Maligne Lake. The one big winter classic that is off this season is the Maligne Canyon icewalk, closed until further notice after the 2024 wildfire.
Yes, if you come for what winter does well: long dark nights in a dark sky preserve, wildlife tours that run all winter, and quiet snowshoe trails at Medicine Lake and Maligne Lake. Two things are missing this winter: the Maligne Lake cruise (back on 28 May 2027) and Maligne Canyon (closed until further notice). If the boat to Spirit Island is the reason for your trip, come between 28 May and 10 October 2027.
Not in any practical way. Spirit Island sits about 14 km down Maligne Lake from the dock, and the only usual way there is the cruise, which runs from 28 May to 10 October in 2027. In winter the lake is frozen and no boats run. You can still visit Maligne Lake itself and walk the lakeshore loops near the dock.
The lake and the road are open; the cruise is not. Pursuit's Maligne Lake cruise ended its 2026 season on 11 October and reopens on 28 May 2027, running to 10 October 2027. In winter, Parks Canada lists easy snowshoe and ski routes at the lake, including the Mary Schäffer Loop (3.2 km) and the Moose Lake Loop (2.6 km).
Yes. The Maligne Lake Road runs 48 km from Jasper to the lake, passing Medicine Lake at about 27 km, and Parks Canada lists winter trails at both. It is a mountain road, though: Parks Canada closes it for storms and avalanche control when needed, as it did in February 2023, so check road conditions before you set out and carry ice cleats for the trails.
No. Parks Canada says Maligne Canyon will remain closed for the 2026 season while it assesses conditions and plans the rehabilitation work needed after the 2024 wildfire, and Tourism Jasper lists it as closed until further notice. As of October 2026 no reopening date has been announced. The guided canyon icewalk running this winter is in nearby Pleckaitis Canyon.
Yes. Parks Canada lists Athabasca Falls and Sunwapta Falls among the landmarks to visit in winter, along with Maligne Lake and Pyramid Lake. Paths can be snowy and icy, and Parks Canada's advice is that bringing ice cleats is always a good idea.
Yes. Wolves are one reason Parks Canada closes the Maligne-Brazeau caribou range to all access from 1 November to 28 February: packed snow trails make it easier for wolves to reach caribou. SunDog's winter wildlife tour lists wolves among the animals its guides look for, alongside elk, deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, coyotes and moose, but no sighting is ever guaranteed.
Operators set their own limits. SunDog runs its winter tours down to −25 °C and makes snow pants mandatory on its icewalk below −16 °C. Dress in layers with a warm jacket, toque and gloves; on the Pleckaitis icewalk the boots, ice cleats, helmet and poles are provided.
Yes. The Planetarium's three-hour Dark Sky Experience at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is bookable through the winter, from US$100 per person (October 2026). The dome-theatre show runs in any weather, and if the sky is too cloudy for the telescopes and the constellation walk, the ticket includes a two-year rain check. Children under 4 cannot enter the dome theatre.
It depends on what you want to do. For the Maligne Lake cruise to Spirit Island, the 2027 season runs from 28 May to 10 October. For the canyon icewalk, SunDog's Pleckaitis departures run from mid-December 2026 (15 or 18 December by source) to 31 March 2027. For dark skies, winter's long nights give you the most hours, and the Planetarium's Dark Sky Experience is bookable through the winter.
