Is the Maligne Lake Cruise Worth It?
Who the Maligne Lake cruise to Spirit Island suits, when a guided day from Jasper beats driving yourself, and how it compares with Lake Minnewanka.
Yes, for most first visits in the open-water season, because the cruise is the only practical way to see Spirit Island. Parks Canada puts the island 14 kilometres up the lake with no road or trail to it, so the choice is a tour boat or a long paddle. The photograph everyone knows is taken from a short trail where the boat docks.

What you actually get
The operator, Pursuit, runs two cruises from the boathouse at the north end of the lake. The Classic Cruise takes about an hour and a half: a boat ride down the lake to the Spirit Island dock, roughly 15 minutes ashore at the viewpoint, and the ride back. A longer Premium Cruise of about two hours runs once a day. Maligne Lake is about 22 km long, the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies by Parks Canada’s description, and most of the scenery is on the water: glaciers on the peaks at the south end, and almost no shoreline development past the boathouse.

When it is not worth it
- Low cloud or rain. The point of the trip is the peaks behind the island. On a socked-in day you see a pretty island and grey air. The boats still run; the view does not.
- A half day without a car. The lake is at the end of the Maligne Lake Road. Pursuit advises allowing about an hour and a half for the drive from Jasper, with stops, and arriving an hour before your cruise. Without a car, a guided day with pick-up is the realistic option; see how to get to Maligne Lake.
- You only want the lake, not the island. The lakeshore trails near the boathouse give big views of the north end for free. Spirit Island is the part you need the boat for.
Guided day or cruise-only ticket
If you have a car and fixed dates, a cruise-only ticket from the operator is the cheapest way onto the boat. Pursuit’s own tickets are non-refundable, and a missed cruise is not refunded. If you don’t want to drive, want a guide for the wildlife on the valley road, or want free cancellation, a guided day from Jasper does the driving for you. Prices for both are on the tickets and prices page.
Wildlife and sightseeing day with the cruise
Hotel pick-up in Jasper, a Medicine Lake stop, a guide watching for elk and moose on the valley road, and the cruise to Spirit Island.

Maligne Lake or Lake Minnewanka?
They suit different trips. Lake Minnewanka is ten minutes from the town of Banff and its cruise is about an hour, so it fits a Banff day easily. Maligne Lake is a half-day trip from Jasper, and it has Spirit Island, which is the reason most people go. If you are staying in Jasper, Maligne is the one to do. If you are only in Banff, Minnewanka is the practical choice.
After the 2024 wildfire
The lake, the boathouse and the cruise are operating. On the way, Maligne Canyon is closed for the 2026 season while Parks Canada assesses slope hazards after the fire, so it is not a stop for now (see the Maligne Canyon page). Pursuit also notes Parks Canada safety work on the Maligne Lake Road, with single-lane traffic and short stoppages, so leave extra time and check Alberta 511 before you set off.
